UPDATE: >>> 01/20/2018 After a few more tins and a closer inspection, the whiteness on this tobacco may actually be a crystalization and not a delicate mold, I saw sparkling in the sunlight. I smoke this blend more than once a week almost always in a meerschaum and it is sometimes for me difficult to pack perfectly(which way is that?) The stuff I am smoking of this lately is about 1-2 years old and is simply .mahvelous. A slight presence of gurgling emerges about halfway through the smoke but tends to disappear as the smoke continues. I've smoked this blend off and on since 2007, so this review is based on a combination of these experiences. After trying this a second and third time, I find that this has now become one of my favorites. Penzance is not as complex as some, but decidedly forthright, honest and delicious on it's own terms. However, one I lit the pipe I was in for a reward. Pipe smoking didn't appeal to me until I tried this absolutely amazing blend. But if you feel moved, the spirit will drive you to your feet. The Latakia is quite nicely appliedoffering an assertive cedar smokiness that melds well with the sweetness from the Virginias. Try some Levant, Arango BS, HH Balkan, Crystal Palace, Blairgowrie, Trafalgar or blend your own Balkan by adding more Oriental to HH Syrian or just start from scratch with a good Cyprian leaf, Oriental Yenidje, Red VA, SG VA flake, Black Cavendish, & a touch of Perique & Burley for a much better result. So, is it a good blend? I do highly recommend this blend and will be purchasing another tin or two when I finish with this one. The tobacco world's own white whale, Esoterica tobaccos are manufactured by G.F. Germain. Fully rubbed out; dried for 5-10 minutes (per my tobacconist's advice), it lit quite easily. Honest disclosure here- I bought a tin of Penzance because I'm a confirmed Anglophile and I love Gilbert & Sullivan. The process is very smooth and linear change. The Virginia's are first class and the sweetness is also there in the tin note. I smoked a few bowls and loved it. His response - 'I have 2 lb. The smoking flavor is on the medium to full side. Using the air-pocket method, I twist a wad into the top portion of the bowl, with some sprinkles to get it lit. But - and it's a mighty big but: scarcity virtually amounting to non-availability - not just in the UK - has created a ridiculous situation. Enjoli' !!! To my palette Richs is a much more credible source. Nope, she's not here on weekly days. I dont think its worth all the effort but it is a four star blend all the way ! The second was Frog Morton. On a side note. I transitioned to pipes (from cigars) back in 2013.
Esoterica Tobacciana Pipe Tobacco I recently got 8 oz?s of this Penzance cause it ticked all the boxes as well, but it?s not nearly as good. Not for the similarity, but for the slogan that Aperitif was perfect for a before-dinner smoke.
Esoterica Penzance tobacco | Badger & Blade Without doubt the BEST English flake out there. Black flakes, that are quite brittle. I decided to go really loose with the bottom of the bowl and then to roll a flake up for the top. Have you ever tried smoking straight Latakia? I had heard about this. It needed a relight but left the pipe dry. Individual reviews are the opinion(s) of the contributor and do not reflect the opinion(s)
Wonderful though moist, heavy and rich. This all suggests to me that this stuff is chemically enhanced to an unacceptable degree. Exceptionally smooth oriental and latakia blend with those two weeds being the main players. If some alchemist could turn a bottle of 60 year-old Single Malt Islay Scotch into a pipe tobacco blend, that blend would taste like Penzance. Ah the legend that is Penzance A blend more mysterious than a black hole. Maybe I just need to smoke faster so that it runs out before it dries out. This is incredibly smooth and cool with a great rich taste to it. If packed and smoked slowly and carefully, Penzance has a wonderful and subtle complexity of sweet Virginias and orientals that weave in and out with the deep background of the latakia. My first encounter was, as with many it seems, as a gift. Now that's what I'm talking about! My local tobacconist gave me a small sample of Penzance, urging me to try it. A fairly full latakia blend that smokes extremely smooth. This review is for Penzance, but I cannot understate how good Pembroke, And so to Bed, Margate, Dorchester ect. Like most of you I've had it up to here (insert hand held high) with lame music analogies with regard to tobacco. It is a damn fine smoke that delivers what it should - a long, cool, creamy, smoky, nougatty, Latakia/Oriental smoking experience. I don't know if I would ever have found it had it not been for the suggestion of pipestud. Was just gifted 15 grams of 20-year-old Penzance (1998), by way of an ebay transaction. The tin is a big plus in my opinion. Just that I didn't find much enjoyable flavor to it. For me Penzance is milder, mellower, and more refined. The Virginia's seem to be aged well to give an enjoyable sweetness to acompany the rich but smooth flavor of the latakia. Age When Smoked: Both New and Aged 5 years. I will certainly put it on my list when it becomes availiable again. Dan Tobacco: Bill Bailey's Balkan Blend 500g, Germain: Royal Jersey: Cavendish and Virginia 50g, Germain: Royal Jersey: Original Latakia Mixture 50g, Samuel Gawith: Mayor's Chocolate Flake 50g. The older the better for this blend, as the Virginias develop their tell tale sugar crystals. This is not to say it isn't an excellent blend, well worth smoking (if you can get your hands on it). The lingering, haunting, room aroma is uniquely "Esoterica". But for a deep, rich smoke with just enough latakia to keep it rich without being overwhlemed by that "essence of damp campfire" found with so man many other modern English blends. The smokey latakia is perfectly balanced by the orientals that are savory and incense like, both supported by a dark mellow sweetness. tobacco blends. Allow me to offer my thanks for your years of wisdom and taking the time to type your thoughts so succinctly (in most cases)you have all been a great help. Not a fan boy. After a brief search for some, however, I reconsidered my position. It is full of flavor and yet unbelieveably mellow and smooth, with no harshness, bitterness or cloying sweetness whatsoever. Sweeter in cob. For a full English blend, Penzance is somewhat milder than I expected. Creamier than one might expect without being overly sweet. Esoterica- Penzance. It seems like the blend may have lost some of its vigor after 6 years. Hmmm.. it seems others have adjusted their ratings too, and not upwards (Original 2005 review) Yup, yup, yup Scroll thru the list and count the 4-stars. It is a heavenly smoke if sipped gently to appreciate all the nuance. Greasy, humid, leathery, yet mild and sweet. The room aroma is strong and very harsh. I would rather choose GLP Odyssey over this when I am in the mood for a full English since that blend seems to change its taste more down the bowl. Limit One Bag Per Customer
A very subtle blend that grows on you. Ten stars. Then it came to me, but first I asked my wife to smell the tin and asked her opinion. Upon initial lighting and the 1st few puffs I sensed the Latakia spice and the Va sweetness as seperate components. Very interesting, when you then look at the label. Nothing to say that hasn't been said 250 times already. There is a special intensity from the compressed tobacco and the burn qualities are remarkable particularly in a latakia laden blend like Penzance. So. The action you just performed triggered the security solution. I think I need to try more of the fruit flavored (cherry?) I guess from a technical standpoint, this is an English blend, but not like most other English blends. This blend is an old companion that can always be relied upon to brighten an otherwise dreary day. You'll be glad it is. (In a world filled with so many Straight Virginia's how come they are never called Virginia Bombs?) There are many more dominate Latakia blends out there, think Ten Russians, a true heavy Latakia blend. Penzance offers a stronger flavor and consistent packing and lighting. This is the best English Flake tobacco I ever smoked! I'm just glad this stuff exists and that I live in a time when I can enjoy it. Salt was the only flavor present. I didn't have to dry or otherwise mess with it to get a perfect burn. I cant remember what town I bought the Coors and Olympia from but it was a small Mom and Pop store. Flakes that are really a crumble flake. Hi everybody, this is here a great tobba, very complex, rich and fine, one of the best this has to be one of my all time faves. Pity it seems so difficult to come by. I like what's there, but it's missing something important to me. Still, I have to recommend it. Several other Esoterica blends have that same iodine scent as a noticeable component of the tin bouquet. The only downside -which really isn't a downside, is the lack of nicotine. Of course the excellent Virginia which is a great combination with the spicy Turkish tobacco keeps a balance with the mix. It was somewhat difficult to stay lit but maintained it's flavor to the bottom of the bowl. Great all day smoke and I tend to enjoy it while reading a good book. A load needs to dry out for 30 minutes or so before smoking. An occasional treat, it is brought out of the hanger on special occasions. Nicely balanced flavors--everything plays a great role, so it never gets boring. Fast forward two years and here I am, really enjoying this stuff. Then the orientals and latakia took over. I wish more than 4 stars were available. Smokers Haven Exotique is by far my favorite of all those blend and the fine ribbon helps with the burning characteristics of that blend. Although I generally do not give in to this sort of bragging/teasing (I always give in), I became obsessed with getting my gritty little fingernails on a tin/pounch/mound/bowl/lick the residue out of an old estate of penzance. Then I cut the label so to fit in the bag, slipped the now emptied boat out of the bag and sealed the bag shut. After cleansing my palate with a gulp of water there was a strange soapy like taste that remained for hours. A bit grassy, but not too sweet. The blending of latakia, virginaian and orientals is very nice. The tobacco breaks easily for packing: a finger stirring it suffices in order to gather a pipeful. Create New Wish List; SKU: 100-8954 UPC: 781755017627. The flavors continue to mingle though more slowly and with less emphasis. Bengal slices white , Perettis Cambridge Flake are very similiar IMO . Once you've lit the pipe they burn a looooong time. Far too many. Over all i liked it, however the tin aroma was almost untolerable. After just a couple of puffs, I realized that I'd smoke Penzance even if it caused the bees to sit on the bowl of my pipe. FREE Shipping on all US orders over $95 | When Will My Package Ship? I WOULD LIKE TO THANK VERY MUCH THE REVIEWER PIPESTUD CAUSE AFTER READING HIS REVIEWS, THE LAST TWO YEARS, I LEARNED A LOT, REGARDING THE TOBACCOS TASTING Even though, I?m a fan of Latakia, this tobacco forces you to revise many of your views. Preparation: The flakes practically fall apart in my hand, despite still being damp. Similar Blends: Sorry, Im not telling this info for it'll make my "comparable blend" become as difficult to find as Penzance !. The room note is just a little bit stronger, but my wife made no mention on whether it was more or less tolerable than the Dunhill. Esoterica's Penzance is one of the finest traditional English Flakes available anywhere. A very high quality tobacco. The tin note is heavenly.just gorgeousbut the crumble cake style is a bit challenging to handle, so extra care must be taken in packing the pipe, as many before me have noted. Such are the burdens of quality, I guess. Definitely worth a try! Conclusion: Because of the scarcity of the tobacco people begin to make comparisons with Balkan Sobranie and Bengal Slices. It stays lite, the moisture is perfect, it rubs out flawlessly. Just hope to get it more easily in the future.and for the tin lover maybe a more appealing label more worthy of the content would'nt hurt either! Availability: Out of StockPrice: $42.95 USD. For such a dense, moist flake it managed reasonable burning qualities. Because of the tricky nature of the leaf and the fact that you have to keep it fluffy, I don't consider this a great trail baccy. Considering only 4 of the 20 ounces were enjoyable bringing the cost to 21.27 per ounce of smokable tobacco, 2 stars here is very generous. Stars - I see stars!! Its not very complex, since it doesnt change its taste much during the smoke, but the flavors it delivers are top quality. Penzance is an interplay of smoky Latakia and creamy, soft orientals, the orientals making it a Balkan blend. A real find. I finally concluded at the end of my day with Penzance that there is truth to the saying that more is not necessarilly better. 5. My life changed that day, and I no longer felt the need to have the best, seal away the most, smoke the best or be the "best". I am finishing first "tin-full" of that bag-10 months later. I am breaking my own rule and reviewing after just one bowl. The turkish became heady and ever present prior to the last relight. Downgraded by two stars, pending opening a new tin; either way, it loses stars. It's just a matter of personal preference. It's kind of got the whole package. The meaty slices are found nicely stacked in their wrapper. In the pipe it is an excellent, balanced English with a nice sense of age. No tounge bite even when heavily puffed. Some have compared it to Frog Morton:no way this is at a very different level and most it is not sweet-sticky-flavored as FM. Not my plate
Taste could be described as smoky with just a hint of natural sweetness in the background. It is Virginia forward with a very faint hint of some additive flavoring that I suspect is anise (licorice). The tobacco was nicely wrapped in paper that was oil stained from the tobaccoawesome! Enjoy. But none of them smell this good to bystanders. I rubbed out one flake gently. All I know was that their price for the box I was looking for was WAY cheaper than most places and 10% cheaper than the next cheapest place I found. Meers work well with it, conforming to these rough dimensions. I gravity fed larger chunks first and then topped these off with finer crumbs with one very light tamp. There are not many alternatives if you want a Latakia-laden pressed blend, the main ones being Old Ironsides and Pirate Kake. I'm going to review Penzance. It lights up with a very creamy soft flavor but then about mid bowl develops a nice nutty, musky, complex. If you have the luck to be there on time than you pay for a tin $ 10.79 and a bag $ 28.95. Highly recommended. And the problem with the moisture is very important with this blend, even crucial. Usually I go through different review components, but there is not much more that can be said about this really good tobacco. This is the only tobacco I can think of that I've finished a bowl, and immediately refilled and smoked a second - it's that good. Almost peppery, as if it had perique in it. The smoke is c reamy and rich. Lights easily and stays lit. One reviewer said dont walk, run to the tobacco store and get some Penzance. After much waiting, I finally got an 8 ounce bag of this fine blend. I purchased a second tin and was equally impressed with this fine tobacco. I waited for two years to get my hands on some of this stuff and finally did a few weeks ago. This smell, which reminds me of iodine, carries over into the smoke and is largely responsible for the absolutely unique flavor and texture of this blend. I received an email notification, I go in minutes later to place the order and it is already sold out. A better approach might be stack ranking those that consistently sign up for alerts only to be disappointed by sold out, giving the rest of us a chance to purchase. Opening my tin I definitely noticed the almost smokey.. beef jerky smell.. not in a bad, store-bought kind of way, but the kind of smokey goodness you'd find at your local farm, or out up in the mountains to the west. The crumbly slices, the piquant Turkish and Orientals, the mellow VA and the generous but not overdone Latakia create a great smoke. For what it is though, it?s a quality product which is deserving of its many loyal followers. The flakes are packed upright & sideways & occupy the full length of the tin. I have noticed that good tobaccos can some times receive bad reviews - can it be that the local, seasonal climate where people live can effect the taste of their tobacco? The flake is readily friable, packs easily, and takes to flame eagerly. It requires lots of relights but it will always deliver a cool smoke. Packing: This tobacco crumbles easily and packs easily into any size pipe. I found it hard not to break the speed limit getting to the shop. One of the most complex blends I have smoked to date. world. I wanted to be just as cool as the 60-year old guy sitting in his underwear hiding in his closet from his beast-of-a-wife and posting on the internet bragging about his non-existent scrooge McDuck supply of Penzance. I have always found the subtleties of latakia interesting, but the blends with which I had previously experimented either overpowered me with the latakia's dominance (which I find both overstimulating and boring all at once), or suffered from a less than optimal quality (a "dirt-like" taste). Reading the entire forum revealed 7 other iodine call outs, starting with reviewer Loosewatches back in July 2006. I am thinking that I may have waited too long to try an English blend such that a total appreciation of same was not my lot. 5/5 in my personal rating system. Like a chocolate brownie. Cut to the chase - highest recommendation for an oriental/latakia/virginia smoke. The mildness and sweetness of the BCA is tempered by the addition of the Latakia. This blend is a true credit to the art of blending tobacco (God knows what's in it, though). I prefer as a summer smoke, letting the smooth creaminess, fill my taste buds. Nuances change and change again as you progress down the bowl. I've been smoking this blend off and on for several years and recently opened a fresh tin. Andrew. I recommend this to all who favor English naturals. I cannot give more than 2 stars because of i'm not a latakia addicted.. Penzance is possibly the most addictive substance known to latakia smokers, and well worth every penny. Not gonna try and find anymore probably wouldnt be able to do it anyway so I am going to enjoy what I have and thats that. Penzance is a very delicate flake and falls apart very easily to the touch. Different smokes for different folks. Whatever it is I can't put my finger on, again. We have over 100 different pipe tobaccos available in bulk including the custom Pipe Ltd. House Blends! As the pipeful progresses, the Latakia makes itself richer and richer while keeping its creaminess, smokiness and slight sweetness; and the Virginias and Oriental affirm themselves a bit more.
